Meet Coach Skyla
Hi! My name is Skyla, and I’m a junior at Newport High School. I’ve played volleyball since I was 12 and have loved it ever since. I play positionally as a setter and continue to improve my skills to this day. Outside of volleyball, I eat and travel a lot! Piano also has a big impact on my life (Robe can tell you about the practices I had to miss for it…).
I chose to coach because I love seeing the younger generation fall in love with the sport that I cherish so deeply. Young athletes are so motivated and willing to learn new skills, which encourages me as a coach to reciprocate that same effort. A coach who continued to push me endlessly is Robe. I played for Robe for 2 years and now coach with him at Podio Sports. He taught me so much as an athlete and human being; whether it's challenging me to learn new skills or to be supportive of my team, I've learned how to be a better part of my community.
One thing I really love about Robe is his extensive connections to all kinds of people. He brings in past players, coaches, and physical trainers who have the best advice and are so much fun to learn from. Robe is also an extremely jolly person—always cracking jokes with refs at tournaments and greeting every parent who walks into the gym. He genuinely leaves a lasting impact on everyone, which is why I want to coach at Podio Sports.
In the future, I hope to keep volleyball in my life while managing a career in the medical field. I dream that one day, I'll travel the world with my puppy.
